Max Barlow tells his secret

Speaker at the April meeting, Max Barlow, and his daughter, Rebecca.
Hiawassee Garden Club welcomed Max Barlow and his daughter, Rebecca, to their April 24, 2008 meeting. During his delightful talk he revealed a secret habit he has had for many years--that of stealing seeds from plants wherever he may be. He showed us his collection of many different seeds he keeps in small match boxes (although no one thought to ask him what happened to all those matches). He generously shared hibiscus seeds with everyone present and encouraged Garden Club members to grow things from seeds, every kind of seed.

This interesting gentleman loves to bake cakes and also took up quilting two years ago. He showed a picture of the beautiful quilt for which he won second prize in a recent Misty Mountain Quilt Show. He could have talked much longer and members could have listened much longer, but he promised to return soon.

President Marlene Arndt gave members an overview of the recent Garden Club of Georgia convention she and several other members attended and proudly displayed two rosettes and a number of blue ribbons won by the HGC for their Flower Show, History of the Club, Publicity Book, and 2007 scrapbook. She also thanked hostesses Cathy Hancock, Gigi Smith, Joan Crothers, and Connie Baron, and welcomed two guests.

The May and June meetings will be concentrating on designs for the upcoming Flower Show at the Georgia Mountain Fair in July, from Wednesday, July 16, to Sunday, July 20. Guests and perspective members are always welcome at the meetings.

A rummage sale will be held at the Garden Center on Friday and Saturday, June 6 and 7, 8:30 a.m. Members please bring household items to the clubhouse. Call Joan Crothers, 706-896-6240, if you don't have a key.
