ReGrass at Old Courthouse
ReGrass is a bluegrass group that has roots in the mountains of North Georgia and personnel whose family ties go back to the earliest professional mountain music. Gerald Lanham was born in Aragon, Georgia, the mill town in the song of the same name by Cy Kahn, to a musical family. His first love was playing the guitar in the style of Merle Travis and Chet Atkins. Some might remember him playing in the finger-picking tribute to local musican, Jr. Mauney. Later, he took up the banjo, and after marrying, he and his wife, Leesa, started a bluegrass band that played in Georgia and the Carolinas for over twenty years. Micah, Gerald's son plays lead guitar and sings in ReGrass, and is also proficient on bass and cello. He is regarded as one of the best flat-pickers. Jared, another son of Gerald plays drums in the band. He has the distinction of having been on the drum line of both The University of Georgia and Georgia Tech. He is currently on the drum line at Georgia Tech. Phil Tanner of the famous "Skillet Lickers" plays fiddle with Regrass. Yes, the Skillet Lickers are still going strong; he just likes to play with Regrass. Larry Holcomb from Lawrenceville Georgia is currently playing bass with the band. Larry has played in a number of bands in north Georgia. ReGrass is, for the most part, a traditional bluegrass band that plays the time-honored songs of Bill Monroe, Flatt and Scruggs, etc., however, expect to hear Gerald play a Chet Atkins or Merle Travis tune. Each of the other band members, Benny, Micah, and Rose usually do some songs that express their individuality. There is no required admission charge; the musicians donate their time and talents. Voluntary contributions to the restoration and maintenance fund are appreciated. |
