Maudie Lorene Hughes

Mrs. Maudie Lorene Hughes, 84, of Rippling Branch Ln., Murphy, N.C., died Saturday, April 26, 2008 in the Murphy Medical Center following a brief illness.

Mrs. Hughes was born Aug. 11, 1923 in Polk County, Tenn., the daughter of the late Garland McHan and the late Lona King McHan. She was a lifelong resident of Cherokee County. She was preceded in death by sisters, Betty Clopp and Bonnie Ledford; brothers, Wendon and Junior Garland McHan. Mrs. Hughes was a member of Notla Baptist Church.

Surviving Mrs. Hughes is her loving husband of 65 years, Garnett Hughes of Murphy; daughters and sons-in-law, Barbara and Jewel Payne of Andrews, Priscilla and James Hill of Chatsworth; son and daughterin law, Willard and Patricia Hughes of Murph; sisters, Catherine Sneed of Murphy, Sarah Jane Bosch of Atlanta, Mary Lou Raper of Murphy, Billie Sue Vest

of Morganton; brothers, Edmond and Joe McHan, both of Murphy, Frank McHan of Monroe, La.; loyal friend, Betty Turner; grandchildren, Lisa Davis, Tammy Luther, Pamela Rose, Jason and Greg Hughes, Ted Kimbrell Jr., Sherry Lynn Dill and Sandra Ann Burger; 14 great grandchildren and one greatgreat grandchild; many other relatives and friends also survive.

Funeral services were held Monday, April 28, 2008 at 2 p.m. from the Notla Baptist Church with the Rev. James Paul and Rev. Avery Beavers officiating. Special music was presented by Edward Vest and James Paul. Pallbearers were Ted Kimbrell Jr., Lee Deal, Mark Burger, Keith Rose, Jason and Greg Hughes. Honorary pallbearers were Evan Hughes. Interment followed in the church cemetery.
