Test is Important Step In Combating Hearing Loss
If you suspect a hearing loss, you're not alone. Hearing loss affects millions of Americans young and old. In fact, according to the Better Hearing Institute, an estimated 30% of people over 65 and 14% of people ages 45 to 64 have some type of measurable hearing loss.* Unfortunately, relatively few seek the help they need because most people lose their hearing so gradually, they do not notice it.
"Many people are also in denial," says Houston-based audiologist Connie Barragan. "They don't know how much they're missing until they have a hearing test." Often it is a friend or relative who alerts a person to a possible hearing loss.
Hearing Loss Symptoms
Symptoms vary from person to person, says Barragan. Common ones include: • Difficulty understanding certain words or
parts of words. • Frequently asking others to repeat themselves. • Difficulty understanding on the phone. • Turning up theTVor radio too loud for others. • Difficulty hearing in group situations.
Value of Hearing Tests
Barragan emphasizes that a hearing test is an important first step for anyone who suspects a hearing loss."Number one,it determines if you have a hearing loss and the degree of that loss,"she says."Number two, it determines if the hearing loss is conductive, sensorineural, or even a combination have
loss of conductive and sensorineural losses."
Conductive losses occur when structures in the outer or middle ear cannot conduct sound vibrations as they should. Causes include excess earwax, a punctured eardrum, or an ear infection. Medical treatment can correct many conductive losses.
Sensorineural losses, the most common kind of hearing loss, occur when nerve endings in the inner ear do not properly process sound vibrations. The most common causes are aging or exposure to loud noise.
"Hearing aids do not restore natural hearing," says Barragan,"and individual experiences will vary depending on how severe the hearing loss is, how accurate the evaluation is, proper fit, and the person's own ability to adapt to a hearing aid. However, they can help people in most listening situations."
