Chuck Wagon Gang to appear at Wood's Grove Baptist Church

Woods Grove Baptist Church counts it an honor to be hosting one of the most famous sacred names in the world. The "Old-Fashioned Singing" Chuck Wagon Gang will be coming to Woods Grove on Sunday, April 27, at 6:00pm.

The Chuck Wagon Gang is still going strong in 2008, and this year the Gang is continuing in the great 72 year tradition of singing the old gospel songs the old time way, just like Dad Carter taught. The Chuck Wagon Gang at one point was Columbia Records' number one selling artist, with sales of over 37 million records. Their concert tours took them to some of the most prestigious performance halls in the United States and Canada, including Carnegie Hall, the Hollywood Bowl, and the Grand Ole Opry.

They are members of the Gospel Music Association's Hall of Fame and a part of the Smithsonian Institution's classic American recordings. Today's Chuck Wagon Gang consists of Dave Emery - Bass and Guitar, Stan Hill - Tenor, Penny Greene - Alto, and Julie Hudson - Soprano. Shaye Truax, granddaughter of original Chuck Wagon Gang alto, Anna Gordon-Davis, continues to make special appearances with the group when available.

As an example of how the old songs retain their popularity, the Gang still includes in their programs today many of the early songs recorded way back in 1936 on the old 78 records. The songs "The Son Hath Made Me Free", "A Beautiful Life" and "I'll Fly Away" are a part of the re-creation of an old 1940s Chuck Wagon Gang radio program which the Gang often does on the second half of their show. One thing that has not changed is the mission of the group, to follow Dad's admonition to "sing the old songs and sing 'em the way I taught you." The Gang hopes to bring the message of hope and salvation to a weary and uncertain world.

Joining the Chuck Wagon Gang for a few songs will be local favorites Jimmy and Johnny Hogsed, Steve Cox and Ken Connor who are always a crowd favorite with their smooth and soulful mountain harmony.

This is the only currently scheduled appearance for the Chuck Wagon Gang in this area this year. Make plans now to join them at Woods Grove Baptist Church on Sunday, April 27 at 6:00 p.m. for what should be a very memorable evening. The Church is located on Georgia Highways 17 and 515, less than five miles from the towns of Hiawassee, Young Harris, and Hayesville and less than a mile from the North Carolina State Line.
