Perlman to perform at Folk School

Acclaimed banjo and guitar player, folklorist and raconteur Ken Perlman will perform at 7:30 p.m. Friday, April 18 at the John C. Campbell Folk School in Brasstown Admission is free.

Ken Perlman is often referred to as a musician's musician -- a player whose style is so accomplished and unique that other musicians go out of their way just to hear him. He draws his material from traditional sources - - the music of Scotland, Ireland, Cape Breton, Prince Edward Island and the American South, but his approach to the music is highly innovative. He is considered one of the top "clawhammer" banjo players in the world, known in particular for his skillful adaptations of Celtic tunes to that style. On guitar, his sparkling finger-picked renditions of traditional Celtic and Southern fiddle tunes are unique.

An active folklorist, Perlman has spent over a decade collecting tunes and oral histories from traditional fiddle players on Prince Edward Island in eastern Canada. In both 1997 and 1998, he received awards from the Prince Edward Island Heritage Foundation for helping to "preserve, interpret, and disseminate our province's fiddling heritage." He has a number of recordings to his credit including Live in the U.K., Island Boy, Devil in the Kitchen and Northern Banjo.

Upcoming concert series performers at the Folk School include The Warren Wilson College Folk Choir (April 25) and The Brasstown Ringers (May 9). The Friday night concert schedule is available on the world wide web at: http://www.folkschool.org..
