Volunteer Day at Vogel State Park What better way to get outdoors than to perform a little physical labor while at the same time making a difference. This is possible at the annual Volunteer Work Day at Vogel State Park on Saturday, April 12. Join other volunteers as they dig, stain, paint, plant, pound and rake Vogel State Park back into shape for the upcoming season. This annual event has become a popular melting pot of volunteers with varied experience and backgrounds. Lifelong friendships have been fostered from this day of fun activities. This year's work projects consist of staining new constructed Adirondack chairs, cleaning the beach of winter storm debris, spreading mulch, performing several carpentry projects, planting tress and painting. The only experience necessary is a desire to make a difference. 2008 is the 75th anniversary of the inception of the 1930's era New Deal program. This Great Depression initiative brought forth such programs as the WPA, TVA, Soil Conservation Service and the most widely known program, the CCC or the Civilian Conservation Corps. Vogel is a result of the work of the "CCC boys." It is only appropriate that we should carry on the tradition of the fine work begun by the individuals who experienced the hard times of the 1930s. Besides working, the volunteers eat as well. Breakfast and lunch are served along with an evening banquet. Volunteers are encouraged to register in advance by calling the park at 706-745-2628. Vogel State Park, operated by the Georgia Department of Natural Resources, is located 11 miles south of Blairsville on U.S. Highway 129/19. |
