Flower of Hope Project for American Cancer Society
Hope arrives every spring with the blooming of daffodils. The American Cancer Society volunteers in Union County have again brought these giant yellow blooms to many in our community. This Daffodil Days project is one of the Society's oldest and most beloved fund-raising programs that help celebrate the mission to eliminate cancer as a lifethreatening disease.
The fresh cut bouquets were offered in appreciation of donors contributing to the American Cancer Society's fight against cancer. The St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church's Relay For Life team again gave leadership to this project. Under the guidance of Janet Hartman and the Union County American Cancer Society Board members, there were over 15,000 daffodil stems delivered to our area this year. "This is truly a project that reflects the motto of our Relay For Life activities as all those involved have truly taken up the fight against cancer," stated Mrs. Hartman.
Some of the volunteers who helped were: Betty Moshier, Janet Hartman, Stacy Head, Barbara Richardson, Jerry Gerbig; Bill Moshier; Dick & Helen Dillenbeck; Nancy Jones; Paula Pendleton;
Sue Upchurch; Allyson McGraw; Linda Jirik; Vee Laffoon; Alta Foster; Ken Roney; Judy Rich; Evelyn Fair; Beverly Orr; Anne Mueller.
Special appreciation is given to the Nantahala Apts. staff in Blairsville for the use of their community room that was transformed into "Daffodil Central" last week.
Volunteers gathered to process the orders and prepare for pickups. Several organizations or businesses adopted groups to receive the special bouquets of hope this year. Those included: Pat's Hallmark; United Community Bank's Golden Club; Union General Hospital Auxiliary; North Georgia Technical College staff. Some of the groups that received the special flowers of hope included: Union County Senior Citizens Center and Meals of Wheels; Union County Nursing Home; Lazy R Assisted Living; Stonehenge Assisted Living; Cancer Treatment Center at Union General; Wesley Mountain Village and Branan Lodge.
"Our volunteers certainly appreciate their interest and support in sharing the message of hope to their community," stated Mrs. Hartman.
