Tax rebate, preparation On Wednesday two weeks ago, President Bush signed an economic stimulus package into law. Most taxpayers will receive a rebate check of up to $600 for individuals and $1200 for married couples, with an additional $300 per child. For seniors living only on Social Security and others with very low income, the rebates will be $300 for individuals and $600 for married couples. The key to receiving a rebate check is that you must file a Federal Income Tax return this year. Even if it has not been necessary for you to have filed in the past, you must do so this year to be eligible to receive the rebate. Free income tax preparation and e-filing is b being done in both Blairsville and Hiawassee. To take advantage of this service and to then become eligible for the rebates, just bring in your Social Security card(s) or statement(s) and all other tax related documents to one of the sites. The Blairsville location is at the new Union County Courthouse on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m. In Hiawassee the service is being offered on Mondays from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m. at the Hiawassee United Methodist Church. There are no appointments and you will be served on a firstcome first-served basis. If you have any questions, please call George Schwane at 706-745-0694. |
