Joan Gaeta Lung Cancer Foundation debuts with first event The recently established Joan Gaeta Lung Cancer Foundation, Inc. makes its public debut with "Dancing for Joan," a dinner, dance, and silent auction to be held on Saturday, February 23, 2008 at The Pavillion at East Cobb in Marietta, GA. Named in honor of longtime Atlanta and Hiawassee resident, Mrs. Richard (Joan) Gaeta, a nonsmoking victim of the disease, the non-profit Foundation was established by her husband and five children to raise awareness for the number one cancer killer in the U. S., and to better inform the public that lung cancer is not a selective disease, i.e., nonsmokers also can be vulnerable. "We're hoping that this event will be the first of many in our effort to not only honor our mother's legacy, but also to shed light on the true facts of the disease and how to better prevent it," says Joe Gaeta, spokesperson for the Foundation. "Every three minutes, someone is diagnosed with lung cancer. The rate of lung cancer in women alone has risen 60 percent in the last 15 years. It's statistics such as these that make us want to draw attention to the disease and to help raise money for more lung cancer research and prevention." About the Joan Gaeta Lung Cancer Foundation Established in the fall of 2007, The Joan Gaeta Lung Cancer Foundation was created by her husband and children to raise awareness of the disease, educate the public, and raise research funds to find a cure. A life long non-smoker, Joan Gaeta was a devoted wife, teacher, and mother of five. Diagnosed in early 2004, she fought a three and a half year battle before succumbing to the cancer in 2007. During that time, she stressed the need for greater awareness of lung cancer (the number one cancer killer in the U.S.), its low survival rate, and its tragic lack of research funds. For more information, visit www.joangaeta.org, write to 860 Johnson Ferry Road, Suite 140-373, Atlanta, GA 30342, or call (404) 435-7376. |
