Between the girls and boys basketball games on Tuesday, January 15th, Union County High School honored it's past state champions in individual competition and presented each them with a plaque.
The first recipient was Larry Turner who was the 1971 Triple-Jump Champion and the school's first ever state champ. Turner nearly won another state title that same season when the Union County boys basketball squad that he played on, finished second in the state. Turner went on to coach baseball at Union County and he guided the 1995 Panther baseball team to a state runner-up finish and first place among public schools in Class A. Presenting Turner with his plaque was his track coach and former Union County Athletic Director, Terry Rogers.
Union County's second state champ was Jamey Gibson. Gibson took the 1990 State Golf Title after shooting a one under par. Gibson's plaque was presented by former Union County golf coach, Joe White. Chris Jones was the third and final recipient but he is responsible for Union County High's third and and fourth state titles. In the spring of 2007, Jones brought home Union's second Track and Field Title in the 1600 Meter event. Then this past October, Jones finished first in the State Class AA Cross-County meet. Jones' plaques were presented by Coach Jackie Hughes.
