Knights to a Greater Degree
Ten local men into the fold; at least to a greater degree. In fact, the ten, members of the Union/Towns Counties Council of the Knights of Columbus, received the fraternity's Third Degree honor on November 3, at an educational and ritual ceremony held in Conyers, Ga. Altogether, there were fifty-five men from north Georgia who were awarded the Third Degree honor, based on their personal advancement in organization's principles of charity, unity, fraternity, and patriotism.
Present for the ceremony and pictured above receiving award certificates at a Blairsville Council meeting on November 9 are, left to right, Andrew Denny, Robert Fanguy, Edward McCaskill, Ronald Cerroni, Michael Brown, and Thomas McKevitt. On the right, presenting the certificates is the council's Grand Knight, Donald Diemer.
The Knights of Columbus is a charitable fraternity dating back to 1882, founded in New Haven, Conn. by a Catholic priest, Fr. Michael J. McGivney, and now numbering in the millions of men around the globe. The order raises money mainly among Catholics, by social events, auctions, and - as one man pictured above put it - just plain begging at their church doors as parishioners leave. Their charitable works are toward the needy, irrespective of religious affiliation, and the men express gratitude for the privilege of serving their fellow human beings.
