Don't let travel torpedo fitness
By Andrea Renee Wyatt, M.S.S., C.S.C.S.

Q: My new job will require me to travel and be away from home - and my gym - for at least two weeks out of the year. I have gotten into the habit of exercising three days a week, and find it not only helps me stay in shape but also is a way to keep my stress level down. How can I continue my workout routine while traveling?

A: Wanting to keep up your fitness routine while away from home shows that you have incorporated exercise into your lifestyle. Traveling can seem like an exercise obstacle; however, with a little planning and research you can keep your exercise habits intact. Packing up your workout and taking it on the road is definitely realistic.

Most importantly, plan, don't stress. Proper planning will allow you to concentrate on the reason you are out of town and not the exercise you are missing at home. Call the hotel where you will be staying and ask if it has a fitness center. Be sure to ask what type of machines and equipment are available so you can plan your workouts accordingly. Remember, you can always use the pool for a workout, so don't forget to pack your swimsuit.

Check with your fitness facility for discounted rates on guest fees at a gym in the area where you travel. Many fitness facilities allow members of other gyms to attend their facility without being a member. Plan time in your schedule to attend the gym and maintain your exercise routine like at home.

Don't forget to keep moving. If you are absolutely unable to make it to your hotel gym or a facility outside of your hotel, just keep moving. Take the stairs instead of the hotel elevator when possible; walk to areas around the city you are visiting instead of taking a car.

Also remember when out of town and away from your normal routine to maintain proper nutrition and drink plenty of water. Pack snacks and enjoy the local cuisine, but try not to overdo it. Try to maintain a sensible eating schedule.

Developing a travel plan for exercise and nutrition can make your travel more enjoyable and help you continue to work toward your fitness goals. Once you return home you can pick up where you left off and never miss a beat.

Always consult a physician before beginning an exercise program.
