"Reflections on Georgia Politics" will kick off the winter term on Thursday, January 10 at 3:15: p.m. in the Wilson Lecture Hall in the Goolsby Center at Young Harris College with Bob Short's live interview of Young Harris College President Cathy Cox. The noted series, which explores the history of mid-to-late 20th century politics, features live interviews and historical recordings of Georgia political leaders who shaped the state's emergence as an economic, political, and cultural force in modern America. Cathy Cox
is at the forefront of the state's rise.
Beginning her career as an attorney, Cox soon followed her father's footsteps into the Georgia State House of Representatives, where she served from 1993-1996. She became Assistant Secretary of State in 1996 and was elected as Secretary of State in 1999, post she served until 2007, at which time she undertook campaign for Georgia governor. One of Georgia's pioneer women politicians, Cox became president of Young Harris College in 2007. Her reflections of life in a Georgia political family and her own journey to the top of state gov- ernment will be discussed with Bob Short, a political insider, historian, and commentator.
Other January programs in "Reflections on Georgia Politics" will be a conversation with Congressman Nathan Deal of the U. S. House of Representatives on Thursday, January 17 and a live interview with former United States Senator David Gambrell on Thursday, January 24. Appointed to the Senate by Jimmy Carter, Gambrell succeeded Senator Richard B. Russell. On January 31 Short will discuss the "Summer of '46," the year when Governor Eugene Talmadge was elected to an unprecedented fourth term. Talmadge's death before his inauguration put the state into the unique position of having three governors. This story will feature James V. Carmichael--the man who could have been governor.
Short's series will continue throughout February on Thursday afternoons in the Wilson Lecture Hall in YHC's Goolsby Center. No programs are scheduled for the month of March, but programming will resume in April. "Reflection on Georgia Politics" is jointly sponsored by Young Harris College and the Institute for Continued Learning at YHC. All programs are free and open to the public. Series announcements will appear in local papers.
