Lady Panthers finish second in Battle of States

The Union County Lady Panthers picked up two wins in the Battle of the States Christmas Tournament in Hiawassee last week to improve to 11-3 on the season. Juniors Candace Williams and Sarah Fulghum were named to the All-Tournament Team. Union defeated Prince Avenue 69-34 on the first night of the tournament.

On the second night, Union County knocked off the 6th ranked Gordon Lee Trojans 64- 47. Williams led the way with a game high 29 points. Fulghum and Gowder each added 14 points. Leslie Bittenbinder chipped in seven points.

Gordon Lee held a 12-11 lead after the first quarter with Williams scoring eight and Gowder adding three, to provide all of Union's first quarter scoring. The Lady Panthers trailed 26-25 at the half with Fulghum scoring four and Bittenbinder adding three during the second quarter. Williams had twelve and Gowder six at halftime.

During the third quarter, Union opened up a ten point lead at 40-30 with 3:42 remaining in the quarter. After three Union led 42-35 with Williams scoring seven and Fulghum six during the third frame.

Union began the fourth quarter with a 10-0 run to take a 52-35 lead with 6:07 left in the game. Gordon Lee got within 13 at 56-43 with 3:45 remaining but Union answered with an 8-2 spurt to put the Trojans away and secure their spot in the Championship Game of the Battle of the States for the first time in school history. Williams scored ten points in the final quarter with Gowder adding six.

Union, Fannin take two overtimes to decide Championship

The Union County Lady Panthers and the Fannin County Lady Rebels took two overtimes to decide the outcome of the Battle of the States Title game last Saturday night. After four quarters of play, the two teams were deadlocked at 49- 49, then after the first overtime, the teams were tied at 52-52. However, Fannin outscored Union 4-1 during the second overtime period to take a 56-53 victory. Williams led Union with 20 points. Bittenbinder scored 13, Fulghum had 11, Gowder finished with seven, and Sullivan added two.

Despite some early foul trouble, Union led 14-10 after one quarter of play with Williams scoring ten and Bittenbinder scoring four, to provide all the first quarter scoring for the Lady Panthers. In the second frame, Union County was only able to manufacture seven points and trailed 24-21 at halftime.

The Lady Panthers exploded with a 22 point third quarter to take a 43-39 lead after three. Williams scored ten and Gowder had seven to lead Union during the quarter. Fannin tied the game at 45-45 with 4:27 remaining and held a 49-47 lead at the 2:36 mark. A free throw from Fulghum knotted the score at 49-49 with 1:47 left to play. Union was unable to capitalize on three Fannin turnovers in the final 1:34 and Gowder fouled out with :06.5 remaining in regulation.

Sullivan converted a free throw to give Union a 50-49 lead with 3:08 left in overtime. Fannin answered with a threepointer to take a 52-50 lead but Fulghum scored Union's only field goal during the overtime periods to tie the game at 52-52 with 1:57 left. Fannin was unable to hit a jumper at the buzzer and the game was headed for a second overtime.

Fannin took an early 54-52 lead with 3:23 left. Bittenbinder hit a free throw to get Union within one, but that's as close as Union was able to get. Fannin hit two free throws to take a three-point lead and Union was unable to force a third overtime with a three-pointer at the buzzer.

The two teams will meet again on Friday, January 11th. That game will count in the sub-region standings and the winner will be in the drivers seat for the sub-region title and an automatic berth in the State Tournament.
