Home remedies from the "Good Old Days" •Beautiful Skin To clear a troubled complexion, take a small portion of dry yeast and moisten with water. Wash your face with warm water and a mild soap, then rinse with vinegar mixed with water and then plain warm water. While face is still wet, apply the yeast mixture. Allow to dry. Wash off with warm water and rinse with cold water. Gently pat dry. •Backaches For minor backaches, take a bath in as hot of water as you can stand with epsom salts liberally mixed in the water. After soaking in the water for 1/2 hour, massage in a tonic made from 2 oz. each of chloroform, alcohol, aqua ammonia, camphor, and tincture of aconite root, mixed in 6 oz. of ether. Store mixture in a corked bottle. •Sore Throat Remedies Salt Pork Balm- Baste slices of salt pork sprinkled with black pepper on a cloth fastened around neck. Hot Tea Treatment- A sore throat can be speedily relieved by using strong, hot tea as a gargle. It is a convenient remedy and a rather pleasant one. •Toothache Cures Temporary Relief- A piece of cotton was soaked with oil of cloves and packed into a cavity of a tooth to relieve toothache until it could be taken care of by a dentist. Emergency Relief- If you have nothing else for toothache, split a raisin in half, cover with black pepper, and put on your tooth. |
