Handy Hints from the Farmer's Almanac Don't push up your cheeks when you're deep in thought. This cause wrinkles, crows-feet and fine lines which will come all too soon anyway. Don't read in a car. It is tiring to read when your hands shake, and you have to concentrate your attention. Squint lines and forehead wrinkles will be the result of this eye strain and nervous tension. Don't bend over your work- sewing, reading, typing- in such a way that you'll develop a double chin. • Comfort in Shoes You can increase your mileage and decrease your footaches if you follow a few simple rules when shopping for shoes. Always wear your best fitting shoes, so that you can compare the new ones for comfort and fit. Have your feet measured everytime you buy shoes. Feet can, and do change in size. Age, weather, physical condition have a decided effect on your feet. Check these points for fit and comfort: - Can you move your big toe freely when standing? - Does the heel fit firmly, without pinching or rubbing? - Does the shoe feel supportive at the instep? - Does the throat fit easily, without buckling or cutting? • Canning Tips Little things that are so easy to remember during busy days of canning are an asset to any cook. Peaches and pears turn brown when exposed to air. As soon as they are peeled, drop immediately into the hot syrup or into salt water (one tablespoon of salt to one gallon of water) if you want to delay processing for a short time. In pitting cherries, if you insert one time of a salad fork into the stem end of the cherry, th pit will come out easily without tearing the fruit. To remove tomato skins quickly: Wash; scald for one minute; plunge into cold water; with a sharp knife cut out the cores and slip off the skin from the blossom end. The same method may be used for peaches. |
