Local Habitat for Humanity Starts 7th House

Habitat volunteers are hard at work building the "foundation" for this family.
Habitat for Humanity of Towns/Union Counties started the build of its seventh house with the grading and foundations work being completed Thanksgiving week. On Saturday December 1st was the biggest single work day in the affiliates' history as 40 volunteers representing 13 local churches gathered at the site on Pearl Wright Road to help build a house for the Thompson family of Union County.

Starting with only the bare foundation in place, the volunteers, under the direction of Solomon Patrick and a few local contractors, installed the foundation cap, floor trusses and floor decking before framing the exterior and interior walls. The roof trusses were also in place before the day was over. A picture is worth a thousand words (see photos) not bad for a days work!!

Breakfast roles and lunch was provided by Emily Price, Habitat Board Member and Candi Mancini, wife of Larry Mancini, Board Treasurer.

The weather cooperated helping to make the day a success. Temperatures started out in the low 40's but warmed to a comfortable seventy something in the afternoon. It was a beautiful day and everyone had a sense of accomplishment when the day was over.

The framing and floor decking are just a couple of the many projects completed on the home.
The day was billed as a "community" day. Based on the sign-in sheets, the volunteers on site represented All Saint's Lutheran, Confidence UMC, Coosa UMC, First Baptist of Blairsville, First UMC of Union County, Grace Presbyterian, Hiawassee UMC, House of Prayer, McConnell Memorial Baptist, Mountain Presbyterian, New Union Baptist, Sharp Memorial UMC, and St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church.

The house will be 'driedin' this week and Habitat will be looking for volunteers to work inside after the first of the year. Weather permitting the house should be completed in March. Check with your church to participate in a Saturday work day or call the Habitat office at 706-379-2484.

If you would like to make a tax deductible donation to help build the next house, or participate in Habitat's Alternative Gift program, send your donation to Habitat for Humanity, PO Box 270, Young Harris, GA 30582. If your donation is an "alternative gift", also indicate who the gift is in honor or memory of, and Habitat will send them a card indicating your generosity and will send you your tax deductible receipt.

Habitat for Humanity is a nondenominational Christian housing ministry.
