N.C. man charged for series of bank robberies
By DWIGHT OTWELL Sentinel Writer

A Cherokee County resident has been arrested in connection with possibly several bank robberies in Franklin, N.C., and north Georgia.

Burton Coker, of 50 Matthew Road in Marble, was arrested on December 11 after an automobile and foot chase in Union County, Ga.

On December 12, the Cherokee County Sheriff's Department, along with the Georgia Bureau of Investigation and investigators from the Franklin Police Department, searched the Marble residence. The search yielded items of evidence in the robbery as well as additional items of evidence which were retained by the Cherokee County Sheriff's office in connection with violations of the North Carolina Controlled Substance Act.

Cherokee County Sheriff Keith Lovin said lawmen found some of the clothes worn in some of the bank robberies. Coker may be involved in as many as four bank robberies, one in Franklin and three in north Georgia.
