Third graders learn about honey bees
Becky Landress Sentinel Writer

Mr. Brewer slides the bee keepers head gear over the head of this youngster.
Towns County Extension Agent, Robert Brewer came to Towns County Elementary School on Wednesday, October 25th and gave a "buzzing" presentation on bees to third grade classes. The kids got to hear first hand how Mr. Brewer himself keeps bees. They learned some important facts about these 6 legged insects.

The third graders will soon be taking a field trip to watch the "Bee Movie" so Mr. Brewer researched the movie himself so he could tell the children the differences between what would be real and what is not.

The students learned that 99.9% of honey bees are girls. There are usually between 20,000 and 50,000 bees in a group in the winter time and the Queen bees' job is to lay eggs and keep the hive going.

After the lesson on the hives, the gear a bee keeper uses, and the insects themselves; Mr. Brewer gave all the third graders a taste of his own sweet honey that was made by his bees.

The children learned a lot about honey bees and bee keeping from Mr. Brewer's visit. The teachers and students of Mrs. Dayton, Mrs. Kuykendall, Mrs. Penland, Mrs. Rich and Mrs. Sutton's third grade classes would like to thank him for the time he took to talk to them and share his knowledge.
