Union County Lions Club

Lisa A. Little and Stephen Helwig.
At the Union County Lions Club meeting, held on Thursday, October 10, 2007 at Steve's Cookie Jar restaurant, a presentation about Leo Clubs was given by Stephen Helwig, the Multiple District 18 Chairperson of Leo Clubs. Steve, a much honored Lion himself, journeyed from Athens, Ga., to discuss the workings of these Lions sponsored groups for you folks between the ages of 12-18 (Alphas) , and again from 19-28 (Omegas). The Leo Clubs open to both sexes, have the following objective: " to provide the youth of the world with an opportunity for development and contribution, individually and collectively, as responsible members of the local, national and international community.

A necessary component of the clubs is a community service project. Lion Steve Helwig told of one group that spruced up a long neglected cemetery, researched the history of those buried there, and marked the graves of the veterans with American flags. Many Leos become Lions. "Kids have a natural enthusiasm, energy, and a willingness to be helpful," said Lion Steve. Keeping his thoughts and experience in mind, the Union County Lions are investigating the possibility of sponsoring a Leo Club in our area.

Also part of the program was the bestowing of awards by President Lisa A. Little and Secretary Betty Gurr on 32 members who received 100 attendance pins. Ken Castle, our President for 2006-2007 received a Growth in Membership Award and new inductees, Eddie Campbell and Rosa Mandon were given their official membership pins.

Our next meeting will be held on Thursday, October 25 at the same location.

Lions Club motto: "We Serve."
