LETTERS To the Editor: The Way to Rain The the lack of water in Union and the surrounding counties has certainly brought much despair. Wishing for rain has produced nothing but a sprinkle here and there. Lakes dropping, wells failing to produce water, while lawns, fields and much loved plants wither away Most church people in these counties do know of a way for the rains to come, and privately they may be using that way. What if all their voices could be heard at one time? What if all the churches, led by their pastors, all in one accord, deliberately prayed as with one voice for God to hear their request? A request for God to rend the heavens and pour down the rain. I was hoping someone else would write this letter to the editor because I have never written one before. I felt compelled for I know where my hope comes from and so do many readers. Because the lack of water is so serious, I'm just saying, "doesn't it make sense to go to the Maker of the rain and ask?" This Sunday would be a good day to start. Lucy Cislak To the Editor: In last week's Sentinel, Mark Chastain, writing for the Republican Party of the Ninth District, makes some constructive observations about appropriate government spending. He also leaves out a couple of important points. First of all, those "Tax and Spend Democrats" are now able to begin to restore the crucial services and investments that have been cruelly neglected during the past seven years. Further, this huge deficit Mr. Chastain describes in his article is a direct result of massive Republican tax breaks for the wealthy, tax breaks for their favored corporations and a war budget that is out of control. Remember, in the last three years of President Clinton's administration the budget was balanced and there were budget surpluses which were being used to pay down the National Debt. Let's get back to responsible government. Frank Maloney Vice Chair Ninth Congressional District Committee Georgia Democratic Party |
