Middle School Football ends season with win Lilo Rivera threw two 50 yard touchdown passes to Patrick Gooch in the first half and that was all the Panthers (3-3) needed as the defense shut down the Riverview offense. Heath King, Phillip Stubblefield, and Gooch led the defense with an interception each. "Our defense played exceptionally well. They have been our strong point all year," said Coach Casey Jones. "Rivera had a good game running and passing, Zach Arnick ran the ball hard, and Christian Forney did a great job lead blocking all game long. The offensive line had it's best game of the year," said Coach Jones. The Panthers have battled injuries all season long with Zach Odom and Jacob Thompson missing a lot of time this year. At one point the Panthers were down to their 3rd string QB after Rivera was hurt during the Rabun County game. Coach Jones has been impressed with his team's progress - both on and off the field. "These kids are at an age where you can really have a big influence on their life and maybe help pave the road that they might take once they get to high school. They have really came a long way this year as far as having pride for Union County football. We had a practice earlier this year where the light went off and they understood what it takes to be a good football player - and a lot of that has to do with pride. Without pride, you have nothing to fight for." Coach Jones was assisted by John Hill, Derek Dillinger, Terry Stuart, and Jake Colwell. The Middle School coaches also work with Coach Peugh and the high school coaching staff. "The High School staff has been a huge help this year! We work hand in hand with the high school. We run the same offense and defense. Coach Peugh gave me some things that he wanted the upcoming freshmen to know on the offensive side, and that is what we've done," said Coach Jones about his cooperation with Coach Peugh and his staff. "Coach Byers and Coach Butler have also worked with the defense. They have helped me with my game plans and with different fronts and blitz packages." With another season of Middle School football in the books, Coach Jones would like to thank his assistant coaches for all of their help this year. "Two out of the four volunteer to be out there without pay. All of these guys are great individuals, great role models, and great friends. They make my job so much easier and so much more fun. I would like to thank Coach Hughes, Coach Peugh and the rest of the high school coaching staff for all of their help. A huge thank you goes to Mrs. Callaway and Mrs. Emerine who work here at the Middle School Library. They helped to prepare the bands that we use on offense. They also make the bands for the high school." |
