Cathy Cox addresses Kiwanis Club

On Monday, September 24th, Cathy Cox, President of Young Harris College, talked to the Kiwanis Club of Blairsville. She spoke of the challenge of growing Young Harris from a two year college into a premiere four year liberal arts institution. The current plan is to be accredited by the fall of 2009 and to begin offering four year degrees for that class. Initially, the plan is to offer degrees in at least 5 majors, to include Music, English, Biology, Business, and Liberal Arts. Education and other majors will follow. The Education program may include a 5-year Masters degree.

On the non-academic side, decisions will need to be made with regard to athletics. NCAA Divisions II (Athletic Scholarships) and Division III (non- Athletic Scholarships) both require that there be 5 teams for both men and women. Another option is the NAIA program.

The current enrollment is 640 students with 90% from Georgia. There are 7 other states, as well as 12 countries represented. It is anticipated this enrollment will double with the transition to a 4-year college. Due to a generous endowment, Young Harris College provides $ 4,000,000 in scholarship assistance.

The Kiwanis Club of Blairsville appreciates the time that President Cox spent with us, and does support Young Harris College through a Scholarship.
