Kappa Alpha News The members of Kappa Alpha Chapter of Beta Sigma Phi have had a busy spring and summer. Following the Founder's Day Dinner and installation of 2007-2008 officers on April 24, we had a very successful Tag Sale on April 28; many thanks to all who supported our fund raising efforts for local charities and scholarships. Our May 8 meeting featured Eagle Scout Grady Garner, who described his project, Map of the U.S. In June, one of the OnLine chapters (yes, we are technically up-to-date) met for a fun weekend at Unicoi State Park and several Kappa Alphas joined them for lunch on Saturday. We celebrated Christmas in July on 07-07-07 in the Fellowship Hall at St. Clare's; we enjoyed a feast of turkey, ham and all the trimmings and then exchanged "high class" gag gifts including a singing, tail-wagging fish and bikiniwearing frog figurines. Our regular July meeting featured a visit from the Union County Fire Department; we got the latest tip on fire safety including a fire extinguisher demonstration. In August, we were invited to an auction and social in Lawrenceville, Ga., hosted by Theta Chapter of the Atlanta City Council; a fun time was had by all. On August 17, Sister Chapter Iota invited us to their lovely and delicious Beginning Day Tea held at Cadence Bank. Our Beginning Day Social was held on August 26 at Sandy and Dick Bell's beautiful, new home. Unfortunately, we did not get a boat ride because of the low water level but we still had a great time. Our first meeting of the new sorority year was held on September 11 at the Mountain Lakes Mill Work, Inc., in Hiawassee, Ga. Our president, Carlene Dockery, is a designer there and was our hostess. Chef Ben Sutton prepared a wonderful meal for us in the working kitchen and gave us great tips on many aspects of cooking while we watched (and drooled). If you missed Mountain Lakes recent open house, do stop by - you will certainly see something you love. Beta Sigma Phi is an international women's friendship network in more than 30 countries. It is not associated with any college or university nor any religious or political organization. Our motto is "Life, Learning and Friendship and our members are women of all ages, interests and backgrounds. Membership provides opportunities to contribute to our community, develop lifelong friendships and polish leadership skills. We are known around the work as "The Friendship Organization". |
