President Cathy Cox discusses four year college at YHC
By STELLA BURLESON
Sentinel Guest Writer

YHC President Cathy Cox
ICL held their fall preview of classes on September 8th at Young Harris College Dining Hall.

The guest speaker was Cathy Cox, the new President of the college. She spoke enthusiastically about the prospect that a four year college may become a reality within two years. This is dependent on the Southern Association of Schools and Colleges being notified by next March of the planning and vision for the future. This process requires a one year wait for accreditation before it could be approved.

If all of the planning and transition is in place, the first class could begin in the fall of 2009 and be ready for graduation in 2011. Earliest degrees would probably be in the area of Music, Biology, English, Business and a General Liberal Arts degree. Later, an Education degree leading to a fifth year Masters degree program is a possibility.

The college has a record enrollment of freshman students of 640 this year, so adding two more years to the program would require long term planning for housing and dining facilities as well as additional classroom space.

This is obviously an exciting and fascinating opportunity for the college and the ICL to be jointly involved..
