The Red Cross needs your help this summer Have you donated blood this summer? If not, take the time - before or after you go on vacation - to donate. The American Red Cross Blood Services needs help every day from people just like you to donate on a regular basis to maintain a safe and adequate blood supply. The summer always presents a challenge in collecting blood because students are not in school and their donations comprise 20 percent of the total blood supply. Also, families usually travel and businesses do not host blood drives because many employees are away on vacation. While the blood supply diminishes, the need does not. "We are asking everyone to visit their local Red Cross donor center or community blood drive and donate this summer," said John Campbell, American Red Cross Blood Services Southern Region. "If everyone would donate at least twice a year we would be able to sufficiently provide lifesaving blood to those who need it the most." Whether you are planning your summer itinerary, heading to the beach or simply looking for a way to beat the heat, think about giving blood and in turn, saving a life. The American Red Cross, Blood Services Southern Region, which supplies blood to approximately 130 hospitals, needs 1,200 blood donors each weekday in order to adequately meet patients' needs. Blood donors must be at least 17 years old and weigh no less than 110 pounds. Please call 1-800-GIVE-LIFE or visit www.givelife.org to make an appointment to donate blood. |
