ICL announces Fall courses

The Institute for Continuing Learning at Young Harris College has announced an exciting lineup of courses for the fall term that will fit everybody's busy schedule. And to further wet your appetite, ICL is sponsoring a free luncheon on Saturday, September 8, at 12 noon in the College's Grace Rollins Dining Hall followed by a preview of the fall courses by the course leaders. The luncheon is free to all, members and non-members alike. Come and see what ICL is all about and meet lots of new and interesting people, including Cathy Cox, the new President of Young Harris College. FORWARD TO THE PAST led by Ann Marie Stanczyk - Mondays, Oct. 1 - 22 (4 sessions), 1 - 3 pm, cost $13 - Resurrect some of the super foods of yesteryear and discuss their health benefits.

THE JEWISH ROOTS OF CHRISTIANITY: EXPLORING THE 200 YEARS BEFORE AND AFTER THE BIRTH OF JESUS led by Zvi Altman - Mondays, Sept. 17 - Oct. 8 (4 sessions), 3:15 - 5:15 pm, cost $13 - Examine the birth and development of early Christianity and its origins as a sect of Judaism.

GEORGIA HISTORY led by Jerry Taylor - Mondays, Oct. 15 - Nov. 5 (4 sessions), 3:15 - 5:15 pm, cost $13 - Discuss Georgia's colonial beginnings through its modern emergence.

CALLIGRAPHY - BLAKCLETTER led by Pennye Loftin - Tuesdays, Sept. 18 - Oct. 23 (6 sessions), 1 - 3 pm, cost $17 - Learn the "Old English" or "Gothic" calligraphic hand.

NONVIOLENCE IN THE 20TH CENTURY: HOPE FOR A SUSTAINABLE FUTURE led by J. Patrick Mahon - Tuesdays, Sept. 18 - Oct. 2 (3 sessions), 3:15 - 5:15 pm, cost $13 - Nonviolence may offer the only alternative to ensure the sustainability of our world.

MOUNTAIN MUSIC led by Sam Ensley - Tuesdays, Oct. 9 - Nov. 6 (5 sessions), 3:15 - 5:15 pm, cost $17 - Learn the music brought by the first white settlers to this area and how it has evolved.

THE RISE OF UNIVERSITIES led by Dr. James Hale - Wednesday, Sept. 19 - Oct. 10 (4 sessions), 1 -3 pm, cost $13 - Maybe one of the most important occurrences in all of Western history.

"ELIXIR OF LOVE" SEMINAR led by Elizabeth Brackin - Wednesday, Oct. 31 (1 session), 3:15 - 5:15 pm, cost $7 - This comic opera by Donizetti makes for interesting conversation.

"ELIXIR OF LOVE" PERFORMANCE - Thursday, Nov. 1, 8 pm, cost $27 - See this opera performed at the Tivoli Theater in Chattanooga.

SELECTED COLLECTIONS AT THE CARLOS MUSEUM led by Colleen Sterling - Thursdays, Sept. 20 - 27 (2 sessions), 1 - 3 pm, cost $11 - An overview of selected artworks from the Michael C. Carlos collections at Emory followed by an optional trip to the museum at a future date at additional cost.

FREE VERSE POETRY WRITING led by Nancy Simpson - Thursdays, Oct. 4 - Nov. 8 (6 sessions), 1 - 3 pm, $17 - Learn the terms and techniques of this popular form of poetry.

LITERATURE OF THE ENVIRONMENT led by Bill Stephenson - Fridays, Sept. 21 - Oct. 12 (4 sessions), 1 - 3 pm, cost $13 - An introduction to environmental writing from early masters like Thoreau to more recent writers.

YOGA FOR CHRONIC PAIN led by Pat Tomczyk - Fridays, Sept. 21 - Nov. 9 (8 sessions), 3:15 - 5:15 pm, cost $20 - Gentle yoga for those who experience chronic pain.

WILDFLOWERS II - FALL led by Elaine Delcuze - Saturdays, Sept. 22 - Nov. 10 (8 sessions), 9:30 am - noon, cost $20 - Study the native flora of the Southern Blue Ridge.
