What's a Studebaker?
Although production was stopped in 1966, the Studebaker Corporation still holds the title of the longest operated transportation in the country. Five Studebaker brothers began building wagons in 1852. Their Conestoga wagons became famous for their durability in carrying settlers to the West. During the Civil War, Studebaker was the largest producer of wagons, caissons, etc., for the Union army. When automobile production began again after World War II, Studebaker was the first automobile to sport a brand new design with the fenders built into the body of the car. People said it was hard to tell if they were going or coming. The North Georgia Studebaker Club is hosting the state meet at the fairgrounds in Hiawassee on August 3 and 4. There should be a good sampling of the different eras of Studebakers on hand, and Studebaker owners love to show off their cars. Bring the family and enjoy a trip into automotive history. |
