North Georgia Rapids Swim Team Championship Meet

This past weekend the "Rapids" had their own fireworks show at the North Georgia Swim League Championship Meet held in Clarkesville, Ga. last weekend with over 600 swimmers competing. Our swimmers competed against some major teams and came away with a superior showing.

Millie Burger, the team's youngest swimmer, pulled away from some excellent swimmers and won the high point trophy for the girl's 6 and under age group. Millie won both the 25 yd freestyle and backstroke with personal best times.

Sam Nichols, age 8, and brother Slayton, age 10, from Young Harris, Ga., competed later in the morning and placed in all of their events. Sam had personal best times in his races with his best finish a 6th place against 23 other swimmers. This is especially impressive as Sam just recently joined the "Rapids". He should have an outstanding future. Slayton also had personal best times in two of his events and received at least a top ten finish in all of his races. Slayton competed against over 40 swimmers in his age group.

Maggie Davis, swimming in the girl's 10 and under age group, the largest group consisting of almost 80 swimmers, had a personal best time in the 25 freestyle. Maggie made an impressive showing and will continue to improve.

Courtney Marshall, age 11, and Tanner Gay, age 12, were the team's only afternoon swimmers, as other members of the team were out of town. Courtney swam personal best times in all of her races, earning ribbons and team points in three of her four events. Like Maggie, Courtney's age group was extremely large, with over sixty swimmers competing. Courtney's best finish was a sixth in the 50 backstroke. Tanner had perhaps his best swim meet ever, significantly bettering his personal best times in all of the events. He had one first and three second place finishes, earning a second place overall finish in his age group. Tanner missed winning the high point trophy by .12 of a second in his final race.

The team will have one more meet at the end of July and then take a short break before beginning preparation for the Fall/Winter season.
