Bluegrass Group 'Highway 76' to perform in Brasstown

This week's concert at the Brasstown Community Civic Center will feature "Highway 76", a bluegrass group from Blairsville, Ga. The concert will be at 7:00 p.m. on Saturday, July 28. Members of the group include Gerald Deaton (banjo), Larry Nichols (guitar), Dwain Brackett (bass), DeLin Brown (mandolin), Steve Pruitt (fiddle) and Tommy Murphy (lead guitar). Almost everyone contributes on the vocals, which are outstanding, especially when the instruments drop out for some a cappella harmony. Larry and Gerald, previously with "Johnny and Gerald and the Georgia Mountain Boys", have played together for years and have both been inducted into the Atlanta Country Music Hall of Fame. Recently they have performed in the old courthouse on the square in Blairsville, Ga.; the Georgia Mountain Roots and Music Festival in Hiawassee, Ga.; and Pickin' on the Square in Franklin, N.C. They can also be myspace and youtube online.

Traditional music concerts are held at the Brasstown Community Civic Center on the second and fourth Saturdays of warm weather months. Local and regional performers have grown fond of the center for its enthusiastic audiences and recently added airconditioned comfort. Admission is $4 for adults with children 12 and under free. Hot dogs, soft drinks, and desserts are available at the concession stand. Concert time is 7:00 p.m., with the box office opening around 6:30 p.m. The center is located on Settawig Road in beautiful Brasstown, North Carolina. Where else can you take a date to dinner, dessert, and some fine bluegrass for about $20?
