Peacock Pride's Session II a Smash! Fantabulous Fables, the second Peacock Pride offering this summer, was a hit with both the 36 students and the nearly 90 audience members. Fables was a week-long improv workshop directed by Laurel Adams and based on classic improv exercises used by many improv troupes such as Second City and Saturday Night Live. The week featured both physical and verbal improv: machines, slaps, falls and other stage combat "gags" and bare bone scenarios where students are given characters, situations and problems to solve. The second element of the week was clogging taught by veteran actor/teacher, Tom Payne, who introduced the students to basic steps and a callout improv technique. The conclusion of the week was a performance on Friday demonstrating both physical and verbal scenes, clogging and a final segment of audience participation: the audience was invited to select a story from a short list and then to call out the team they wished to tell the story. There were some very humorous and quirky twists to Aesop's Fables which the famous storyteller would have enjoyed. |
