Junior All-Stars fourth in state

Scott Keen readies the pitch while Stubblefield and Martin get ready on defense.
The Union County Junior (age 13-14) All-Stars took fourth place in the 2007 Georgia Recreation and Parks Association (GRPA) State Tournament held in Baxley, Ga. The team's only losses came to Jeff Davis, the team that went on to win the State Championship.

Game 1:

Union 7 - Jeff Davis 9

Jeff Davis jumped out early, scoring one run in the second inning, five in the third, and three more in the fourth. By the end of the fourth the score was Jeff Davis led 9-0, but in the fifth Union's bats came to life when Dustin Owenby lead off with a single. Grant Nix then reached on an error and Scott Keen hit a single driving in Owenby for Union's first run of the game.

Union was not done there as Coleman Sullivan hit a single that drove in Nix. Dalton Everett reached base when the second baseman misplayed the ball, allowing Keen to score. Brady McCarter doubled to score Sullivan. Nathanial Otto hit a single driving in Everett and Daniel Coyne hit a sacrifice scoring McCarter. By the time the fifth inning finished, Union had sent 10 guys to the plate for a total of 7 runs. Union had the momentum but the game was called early because of a 2 hour time limit.

Game 2:

Union 9 - Evans 7

Union started hot as Sullivan reached on an error and stole second base. Everett and McCarter followed with walks to load the bases. Otto sacrificed to score Sullivan, but Evans held a 5-1 lead after the top of the second. In the bottom half of the inning Trey Thomas lead off with a single, reached second on an error by the first baseman, and later scored when Patrick Martin hit a single up the middle. Stubblefield moved Martin over to third and Keen singled to drive in Martin.

Sullivan walked and later reached second on a balk by the pitcher. He scored on a single by Everett. At the end of the 2nd inning the score was tied 5-5 In the third inning McCarter lead off with a single and was later out on a fielder's choice. Otto reached on an error by the second baseman before Andrew Walker drove him in. Walker later stole second base, setting up an infield hit by Thomas. Walker and Thomas later scored when Coyne hit a shot down the first base line. Union led 8 - 5 at the end of the 3rd inning. Union added one more run in the fifth when McCarter lead off with a double and later scored when Nix hit into a fielder's choice.

Game 3:

Union 9 - Morgan 1

Once again Union's bats came alive in the sixth inning. Union scored one in the first and one in the third, leaving them up 2-1 after five innings. In the 6th inning McCarter reached on an error, stole second base and advanced to third on a sacrifice by Otto. Walker laid down a perfect suicide squeeze allowing McCarter to score. Walker reached base safely and later took second base on a passed ball. Thomas reached base on an infield hit and stole 2nd base before Coyne hit an infield hit allowing Walker to score.

While Owenby was at the plate Coach Everett called for another suicide squeeze but before the ball could reach the catcher, (Speedy) Thomas had reached home plate stealing home without the squeeze. With Owenby still at the plate the coach called for yet another suicide squeeze. Owenby also laid down a perfect bunt, allowing Coyne to score from third. Nix reached on a walk followed by a single by Keen. Sullivan reached on a single and scored Nix. Everett drove both Keen and Sullivan in with a single ending the game.

Game 4:

Union 1 - Jeff Davis 8

Union had its opportunities early but the ball didn't fall the right way, leaving five guys on base after three innings, but also holding Jeff Davis to only one run at that point. Union's only score of the game came in the fourth inning after Otto and Walker hit back-to-back singles. Walker later got into a run down that allowed Otto to score.

In the fifth inning the same balls that Jeff Davis had hit in the previous innings were now starting to find holes. Despite only a pair of solid hits during the fifth, 10 batters came to the plate. Jeff Davis went on to win the State Title. Union County played them closer than any other team in the tournament, especially during the first game.
