Senior Men's Softball All Star Game On Saturday, June 30,2007, the Union County Senior Men's Softball League held their annual All Star game at Meeks Park. The All Star team was comprised of players from the four-team league, represented by Union, Towns, Fannin and Murphy counties. Their opponents were an All Star team from the Woodstock, Ga. area. A total of three games were played, with the Union County team winning all three. The first game was a pitchers dual. Woodstock scored two runs in the top of the first, but Union responded with a run in the bottom of the inning when lead off hitter, Rich Garren, doubled and later scored on a single by Butch Sabine. Union threatened in the fourth inning as Tom Devine and Dave Scott opened with singles, but they were later left stranded. Woodstock was then shut out the rest of the way and Union scored two runs in the bottom of the fifth on a couple of Woodstock errors, a single by Steve Taylor and a fielders choice to pull out the 3-2 win. The bats got going in the second game, with the final score Union 18, Woodstock 15. Union was led by Tom Devine with four hits; Harlan Roberts, Tom Byers and Bob Pittman had three hits; Rich Garren, Sal DeVito and Butch Sabine got two each; and single hits were recorded by Vic Cascarano, Dave Richterkessing, J. Pachy, Bill Rohloff, Trip Martin, Steve Taylor and Andy Monger. The final game was another close one. Woodstock jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning, but Union responded with two runs in the bottom of the second on a solo home run by Tom Devine and singles by Andy Monger, Trip Martin and Steve Taylor. Woodstock scored three more runs in the top of the third to take a 6-2 lead, but again Union responded with three runs of their own in the bottom of the inning and then tied the game at 6-6 with a single run in the fourth inning on a single by Vic Cascarano. In the bottom of the sixth, with the score still tied, Union loaded the bases on singles by Trip Martin, Steve Taylor and Rich Garren. Vic Cascarano then drove the first pitch over the right fielders head for the game winning hit, and Union celebrated with a 7-6 win. Sspecial thanks to Vic Cascarano for organizing the games and to Don Ransom and Chuck Marshall for umpiring. The Union County team would also like to thank co-sponsors Union Realty and Zaxby's. The league plays regular double-header games at Meeks Park on Sundays at 2:30 p.m. |
