RAINER'S RAMBLINGS
Telephone numbers
By RAINER ARNOLD Union Sentinel Publisher

A few minutes ago my wife asked me to call my daughter and ask her if she had heard from my son who was flying in from Scotland with his entire clan of wife and 4 kids. They live there and called me the other day that they were coming in a few days. Typical of them to do things very quickly. I was cool with that but had few details other than we'll see you in a day or so.

So, the wife asked me to call and I told her I had to wait until I went out to the car to get the cell phone which was charging in my truck. I also had to admit I did not recall my daughter's home number or cell number. They were on the cell phone quick dial and thus I actually had no need to remember. When we were talking about that I thought this is really terrible. What if I lost my cell phone? How would I call my family and friends? I have not committed to memory any of those numbers. I could not call many people without my cell phone.

I wonder if there are other people who are in the same situation. And speaking of cell phones, I heard the other day during the Save the World special that cell phone chargers in the house emit something that is not good. So, I am now charging my cell phone in the car since it is handier and I won't have to leave the charger plugged in at the house.

But getting back to the bad part. Can you believe that modern technology has gotten us to the point where we would be in a real pickle if we lost our cell phones? Also, this issue made me recall that I almost forget my own cell number since I don't usually call that number. Sometimes I think modern technology makes us so dependent on it that without we can barely function. I just don't think that is good.

So, what am I going to do about it? I think I will punch in my daughters number from now on as well as my brothers so I can commit both to memory and if I lose my cell phone at least I can call my immediate family if I want or have to. I wonder how the rest of the world feels about this issue?
