Nelson and Buck in concert Nelson Thomas and David, better known as "Buck," Buchannon are well known throughout the mountain area for their performances. Not only do they perform many of the old mountain standards, many of their songs are of their own making, and they add their own distinctive flavor to any song they perform. They return to the Old Courthouse on the Square for a performance on Friday, July 13, at 7:00 p.m. Each plays several instruments which include guitar, banjo, fiddle, mandolin, and harmonica. They demonstrate what is meant by the term, "fiddlesticks," when one plays the fiddle and the other keeps rhythm on the fiddle string with sticks. This was done in the old days when a fiddle might be the only instrument at a mountain dance, and the sticks were used to help make the beat heard over the pounding of the dancers' feet. The summer concerts in The Old Courthouse on the Square are presented by the Union County Historical Society as a public service and to keep alive the tradition of music in the Old Courthouse. There is no required charge for admission. Voluntary contributions to the restoration fund are always welcomed and appreciated. |
