Thomlinson first in National Fiddling Championship

A Georgia contestant was declared the top fiddler at the National Championship for Country Musician Beginners during the 36th annual Fiddlers' Jamboree in Smithville, Tennessee on July 7, 2007.

Alex Thomlinson of Suches, Ga., was awarded the First Place Fiddle trophy by Neil Dudney, president of the Jamboree, and also received the coveted James G. Driver Memorial Beginners National Championship Fiddler Award and monetary prize.

Runners-up for the national fiddling championship were Cole McCracken of Floyd's Knob, Indiana, 2nd Place; and Ruby Jane Smith of Columbus, Mississippi, 3rd Place.

Many of the participants in the prestigious beginning fiddle competition arrived with impressive credentials. The 2007 lineup included State Champion Beginning Fiddlers from Indiana, Kentucky, Mississippi, Georgia, Alabama and Tennessee, as well as Fiddlerof the-Festival from North Carolina's Fiddler's Grove Competition. Alex Thomlinson is the current State Champion beginning fiddler in both Georgia and Alabama.

The National Championship for Country Music Beginners showcases the talents of children, 12 years of age and under, in seven categories of competition: Fiddle, Guitar, Dobro, Mandolin, Banjo, Buck Dancing, and Clogging. Grant Rigney of Normandy, Tennessee received the "Entertainer of the Year" Award, which is presented to the best overall instrumental entertainer among winners in Beginner categories of mandolin, dobro, banjo and guitar.

The 2007 Fiddlers' Jamboree featured a total of 31 competitive events, and offered over twelve thousand dollars in prize money. It has been listed as a "Top 20 Tourist Favorite" for the past 16 years by the Southeast Tourism Society. The two-day jamboree was attended by an estimated 140,000 persons, who enjoyed the instrument, dance, and vocal competitions, Appalachian craft fair, and 5K run.
