RAINER'S RAMBLINGS
Pride
By RAINER ARNOLD Union Sentinel Publisher

I know we all have something to be proud of. If not our grandchildren, then maybe our children. Then there are some of us that are proud of our motorcycles or cars. Well, I am proud of all those things but lately my proudest thing is that I hired Jared Putnam as Editor of the Union Sentinel a little over one year ago.

As the publisher and an individual who also is the personnel manager of another company, I am especially proud of Jared. He is what an employer can refer to as a dream employee. He is smart and he is efficient. He is honest and has good character. On top of all that he is talented beyond words.

He writes well and his photography is even above that. That has been proven by the Georgia Press Association, which has given him two very nice, statewide, photojournalism awards. Oh, and this is only his first year as editor of the paper. What more could any publisher ask of his employee?

I also know that when someone does well others see it also. So now I am beginning to be concerned about some other paper in a bigger market noticing his exceptional capabilities and maybe trying to hiring him away. If he keeps up this good work, and I am sure he will, someone will eventually hire him elsewhere. Plus, remember, Jared is only 27 and will soon want to take on more responsibility and move to a bigger city with bigger goals and bigger hurdles to climb.

Now, I for one do not want him to leave. But if he ever decides to go elsewhere, I will help him all I can because therein lies another source of pride. After all, who would not be proud of a youngster like Jared when a few years down the road he would be the Editor of the

Gainesville Times or some paper like that. That would be something to take pride in especially since he is such superb young person and an asset to any community in which he lives.

So, if you see him on the street or somewhere else, please make the time and effort to congratulate him.
