Volunteers needed for S.A.F.E. Childcare Program Volunteers are needed to assist with the Children's Program offered by Support in Abusive Family Emergencies, Inc. The program helps victims of abuse by providing a positive environment for children who have experienced abuse in their lives, whether directly or indirectly. While parents attend a domestic violence support group, the children enjoy group play and positive characterbuilding activities. Help is needed for this program from 6 to 7 p.m. on Tuesday evenings, and from 1 to 2 p.m. on Wednesdays. Volunteers can work whenever their schedule permits, whether it is once a month or twice a week. Even one hour a month is a tremendous help to the program and the children in our community. Arts and crafts, games and outside play are some of the activities available for the children. It is also a time for volunteers to offer friendship to children who can feel like they are outsiders because of circumstances they can not control. Treasure chest donations are also needed for children of all ages. These items can be crayons, pencils, stickers, toys, books or anything to make the children feel welcome and special. These items are given out to the children at the end of each session. The children range from toddlers to teenagers, so a variety of items for all ages are needed. Snacks and juice boxes are also needed for the group. If you are interested in becoming a Children's Program Volunteer, please call Kim Klaas at 706-379-1901. To donate treasure chest items or snacks for the program you may drop donations off at the S.A.F.E. Thrift Store, 2493 Blue Ridge Highway in Blairsville, or the S.A.F.E. Again Thrift Store, 1547 Mining Gap Road in Young Harris. Just tell the person at the register that the items are for the Children's Program at the shelter. S.A.F.E is the state certified domestic violence and sexual assault program serving Towns and Union Counties, and is a certified member of the Children's Advocacy Centers of Georgia. Partial funding is received from the Georgia Department of Human Resources. |
