From Start to Fitness Q: I am planning to take several vacations this summer. Recently I have started seeing good results from my workout routine, and I don't want to lose my momentum. How can I modify my fitness program so I don't slip backward while I am on vacation? A: Vacations are a time for relaxation and fun, which may make fitting in 30 minutes to complete your abdominal routine quite challenging, not to mention boring. This challenge can be met and conquered through creative thinking and planning. Staying motivated and focused on your workout routine while on vacation can be as easy as developing a plan ahead of time. You have worked hard, and now it is time to play hard. All you have worked toward will not be lost while on vacation. Let your body show you what it has learned. Each workout that you have completed has taught your heart, bones and muscles to become stronger and more equipped to deal with the activities of everyday life. You may notice that you are able to handle your luggage with ease, rush through the airport without getting out of breath, or take part in a hike or sightseeing tour that would have previously exhausted you. Those examples test your body on what you have been teaching it. Although this may not seem like a structured workout, remember that part of becoming fit is allowing what you do in the gym to be demonstrated somewhere in your daily life. Look for physical activities to participate in while on vacation. Find activities such as a biking tour, swimming, canoeing, tennis or even walking on the beach to keep your body moving. Allow this time for your body to experience different forms of exercise. You may find that you wouldn't mind adding some these activities to your fitness plan when you return home. Inquire about a fitness facility at your hotel or resort. If you would like to continue with your current program while away, ask what type of fitness amenities are available. Knowing that there will be a treadmill waiting for you upon arrival may make for a smooth transition. If there is no fitness facility on premise, inquire about any nearby that you make be able to pay a guest fee to attend. Relax, have fun and enjoy that change to your normal schedule.
