ICL Summer Seminars at Young Harris College

The Institute for Continuing Learning (ICL) seminars during this summer quarter include Fantasy Baseball and Radio's Golden Age. Speakers for the seminars include Dr. John Kneiss, Chair of the Social and Behavioral Studies Division at YHC, and Dr. Ron Roach, Maxwell Professor of Speech at YHC.

Fantasy Baseball:

Did you ever imagine what you would do if you were the General Manager of a major league baseball team? That is what many baseball enthusiasts have imagined and then put their imagination into action. This session is for baseball fans or those that must live with one. The focus of this class will be on how a fantasy baseball league is operated, from the selection of teams and players to the statistics that run the league. Dr. John Kneiss, a baseball fan from his childhood days following the Big Red Machine, will conduct this class. He has been the Commissioner of a local fantasy league that is currently in operation and was formulated in the early 1990's. Dr. Kneiss teaches Recreation and Physical Education. The cost of the seminar is $7 per person and membership in ICL is not required.

Radio's Golden Age: Who was that masked man? Who knows what evil lurks in the hearts of men? Who's on first? These phrases and many more became part of American culture, thanks to radio, the first broadcast, mass communication medium. From 1920 well into the 1950s, radio was America's premier entertainment medium. This course will survey those golden days of radio. Dr. Ron holds the MA from UNCGreensboro and the PhD from Regent University. His research interests are the history of rhetoric (especially 18th-century Scottish rhetoric), Appalachian rhetoric and the history of radio. He lives in Choestoe with his wife Debbie and their two sons. The cost of the class is $13 per person and membership in ICL is not required.

Contact Bob Langenbacher in Young Harris (706-379-2660) or e-mail icl@yhc.edu for additional information. ICL is a not-for-profit organization with excess operating moneys going toward scholarships for students at YHC. In its 16th year of operation, the Institute offers a wide range of educational opportunities for adults of all ages.
