Summer Safety Tips
Food Safety

Many food borne illnesses can occur if food is not properly prepared or stored. Sometimes this is difficult to do if picnicking or camping. Keep meats, milk, and other foods that spoil packed in ice chests or refrigerated (if available). Do not allow food to sit outside uncovered for long periods of time.

Know what you are eating. Many berries and fruits grow wild in the spring and summer in Georgia. Among them are figs, persimmons, muscadines (scuppernongs), gooseberries, blackberries, blueberries, crab apples, and others. These are very tasty treats if a few preparatory precautions are taken. Always wash wild berries and fruits well before eating. In addition, watch for bee's nests and snakes when picking wild berries. Know what to do for bee stings, insect bites, and snakebites and have the appropriate first aid items handy.

Remember, whatever you choose to do, make it safe. Always follow laws and rules and make sure you are prepared to participate in the activity you choose. A few simple preparations can make your outdoor experience more enjoyable.
