(Below) The kids gather and have fun with the instructors while learning the lessons with games and imagination.
Four hundred and forty fourth graders attended a series of "All About Trees" Field Days at The Georgia Mountain Research and Education Center. The Education Committee of the Community Council sponsored this event. Attending students were from public schools in Towns and Union Counties in Georgia and Clay County in North Carolina as well as students from Mountain Area Christian Academy in Morganton, Georgia. Several home schooled students also attended this event. They spent their day outdoors in classes that centered on the topics of

Orientation to Appalachian Forests Georgia Native Tree Identification * Tree Parts * Uses of the Forests * Forest Ecology * Chromatography with Leaves

* Habitats and Limiting Factors

Some classes attended sessions on the subjects of Honey Bees and Sourwood Trees, Invasive Plants and received instruction as they walked the Woodland Medicinal Trail. Several groups of students were treated to Fannin County storyteller and minister, Keith Jones, who provided lunchtime diversions by sharing tales of the legendary Paul Bunyan.

A special message of thanks goes out to the fifty adult volunteers who gave their time and talents to make this hands-on experience possible. Financial commitments from local supporters make activities such as this possible so sincere appreciation is extended to those organizations and businesses that cooperate with our fundraising endeavors. The Education Committee also sponsors or works with similar activities for students in grades K- 12. These activities would not be possible if it were not for the hard work and dedication of the administration and entire staff at The Georgia Mountain Research and Education Center. It is a massive responsibility to prepare the grounds for such a large outdoor activity and the Education Committee appreciates their efforts.
