Tom Williams guest of Union County Lions

Did you know that here in Union County, 58 female and 116 males receive assistance from the Recoding for Blind and Dyslexic (R.F.B.& D.)? The R.F.B.& D. is a Lion approved project that assists individuals with visual impairments by means of books and recordings. For Georgia, the R.F.B.&D. is located in Athens, Ga.

Lion Tom Williams is current 18-D Committee Chairman and was recently guest speaker at a Union County Lions Club meeting. Introduced by Lion President Ken Castle, Lion Tom's home club is the Athens Lions Club. Becoming a Lion is 2004, Lion Tom wanted to be immediately involved and has a passion for those with visual impairments, thus the R.F.B.&D.

Lion Tom gave a brief history of how the R.F.B.& D. began and a testing that was done by John Hopkins University in 2001, with three separate groups of visually impaired people. The testing consisted of one group with story books only; a second group listening to radio, and the third group with random recordings. Of course, the group with story books retained the most information.

The Athens R.F.B.& D. is always in need of volunteer readers and Lion Tom Williams may be reached by way of his email as follows: tardis142004@yahoo.com. We thank you Lion Tom Williams for taking time from your busy schedule to visit and speak to the Union County Lions. Lions Motto: We serve.
