2007 Old Unicoi Trail Chapter DAR School Awards

Jasmin Gonzalez, Ann McNeill Darwin Scholarship Winner, Union County High School, Rhea Galati, DAR Scholarship Chairman and Eloise Wolfersteig, DAR Regent. Jasmin will attend Georgia Tech this fall.
For 73 years chapters of the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) have recognized outstanding student in local schools throughout the nation. The Old Unicoi Trail Chapter, comprised of members in Union, Towns and Fannin Counties, held their 10th annual Awards Program on Sunday, May 6, 2007, at the First United Methodist Church in Blairsville. Parents, students, friends and teachers gathered at 3:00 p.m. for the presentations to these deserving students. We extend our thanks to the following teachers who encouraged their students in the 5th through 8th grades to participate in the "American History Essay" contest: Janis Martin, East Fannin Elementary School; Pat Everitt, Union County Middle School and Sandy Brock, Mountain Area Christian Academy.

American History Essay Contest Winners:

Megan E. Little, 5th grade, East Fannin Elementary School; Amy Elizabeth Brumley, 6th grade, Union County Middle School; Carly Murphy, 7th grade, Mountain Area Christian Academy and Grace Elizabeth Patterson, 8th grade, Mountain Area Christian Academy.

The following students were awarded the Good Citizenship Medal:

5th Grade Winners: Taylor Foster, Blue Ridge Elementary School; Zeb Shepard, East Fannin Elementary School; Adam Knowles, West Fannin Elementary School; Stephany Hooper, Towns County Elementary School; Tasha Green, Union County Elementary School and Logan Wood, Woody Gap Schools.

8th Grade Winners: Molly Dunn, Fannin County Middle School; Adrenne Hamilton, Towns County Middle School; Tyler DiNatale, Union County Middle School and Bretney Langston, Woody Gap Schools.

11th Grade Winners: Rebekah L. Adams, Fannin County High School; Kristen Lauren Black, Towns County High School; Timothy Jacob Grizzle, Union County High School and Thomas Pirkle, Woody Gap Schools.

The Good Citizen Medal:

The "Good Citizen Medal" is awarded to students chosen by their schools for qualities of Honor, Service, Courage, Leadership and Patriotism.

Fannin County High School: Matthew Alan Gaddy

Towns County High School: Sara Judith Rodgers

Union County High School: Bonnie Ann Sarrell, "Chapter Winner"

Woody Gap High School: Will Barton

The DAR Ann McNeill Darwin Scholarship:

The Ann McNeill Darwin Scholarship was awarded to Jasmin Gonzalez, 12th grade, Union County High School. Jasmin is the daughter of Victor and Josefina Gonzalez.

The DAR extends special thanks to those devoted and untiring teachers, administrators and parents who encourage, work with and set an example for the young people of our communities. You are an important part of our Awards program.
