. On May 10, 1877, President Rutherford B. Hayes has the White House's first telephone installed in the mansion's telegraph room. President Hayes embraced the new technology, though he rarely received phone calls. The White House phone number was "1."

. On May 12, 1903, President Theodore Roosevelt's trip to San Francisco is captured on moving-picture film, making him the first president to have an official activity recorded in that medium. The film showed Roosevelt riding in a carriage and escorted by the Ninth U.S. Cavalry Regiment, which was unusual for the time because it was an all-black company.

. On May 9, 1914, President Woodrow Wilson issues a presidential proclamation that officially establishes the first national Mother's Day holiday to celebrate America's mothers. The idea for a "Mother's Day" is credited by some to Julia Ward Howe (1872) and by others to Anna Jarvis (1907), who both suggested a holiday dedicated to a day of peace.

. On May 8, 1933, the first police radio system, connecting headquarters to patrol cars and patrol cars to one another, is installed in Eastchester Township, N.Y.. The system consisted of one transmitter of 20 watts for the headquarters and two transmitters of 4.5 volts each for the two patrol cars.

. On May 7, 1947, Kraft Television Theater debuts on NBC with a play called "Double Doors." The show ran for 11 years. Kraft had launched Kraft Music Hall in 1933 as part of a promotional push to introduce its new salad dressing, Miracle Whip.

. On May 13, 1956, Gene Autry's musical variety show, "Gene Autry's Melody Ranch," airs its final broadcast after 16 years. The weekly radio show featured 10- to 15-minute skits about cowboys and rustlers, along with musical numbers by Autry, "America's singing cowboy."

. On May 11, 1976, long-running TV medical drama "Marcus Welby, M.D." airs its last episode. The show, which premiered in 1969, was ABC's first No. 1-rated series.
