The Blairsville PTO and Union County Schools presented the 5th annual Art Show Friday, as retiring Metals Instructor Dennis Bradley was acknowledged for his 30 years of service to Union County students.

The event was held in the UCHS gymnasium, where art work from students of all grades and ages was on display, as well as some of the creations of Bradley. His "Steel Stallion," and "Heavy Metal Band" (bearing the likenesses of Mrs. Ludlum, Mr. Kelley, and Mr. Rohrbaugh) greeted visitors outside the building.

Union County Primary School art was created under the direction of Mrs. Jane Edison, who utilizes almost anything given to her class, including chalk, yarn, paint, and glue. Her goal is to ensure that her students develop a good foundation in art/design through exploring different media, discussing elements of design, and experiencing a variety of project work.

Union County Elementary School students receive art direction under Mrs. Sandy Sharrock. Third grade projects included the creation of clay pottery and the "Birds of a Feather" drawings. Fourth grade classes studied French Impressionist painter Claude Monet and completed a unit on printmaking during the schoolyear, while fifth grade students spent much of the year working on drawings, that focused on depth and dimension.

Union County Middle School students were directed by Ms. Sylvia Garner. The students received basic instruction in the fundamentals of visual representation. They explore the five directions of line, turning geometric shapes into forms, four color shading techniques, and texture. The classes then move into exploring color and the color wheel, and have at least one 3-D unit of study each nine weeks. These students created the Panther Sculpture.

Union County High School students had a number of different projects on display, as they are offered the opportunity to take a variety of Visual Arts courses each year. These choices include pottery, sculpture, art/drawing, painting, and more. The classes are introduced to detailed techniques in each respective medium.

Other Clubs and organizations that were also on display or recognized at the event included the UCHS Writer's Club which publishes the Pathways Literary Magazine, the UCMS and UCHS Choruses, the UCMS and UCHS Bands, and the UCHS Career, Technical & Agricultural Education (CTAE).
