Spring Break, Boy Scout Style
Twenty-four members of BSA Troop 101 went to Cumberland Island National Seashore off the coast of St. Marys, Ga. for spring break. The troop left on Monday, April 9, 2007, of spring break and returned on Friday, April 13. They stayed at the Crooked Creek State Park on Monday night and caught the first ferry out to Cumberland Island Tuesday morning. The ferry took about 45 minutes to get to the Island and then the troop hiked a half mile into the group camp sites.
The troop enjoyed beach time, hiking 13.5 miles to Plum Orchard (an old historic mansion), exploring the Old Dungeness ruins and many close encounters with the local critters including raccoons, armadillos, snakes and wild horses! Cumberland Island contains four major historic districts and 87 structures listed on the National Register of Historic Places, as well as the oldest known ceramics in North America and shell middens from early natives. After a day of fishing, the troop enjoyed fresh seafood caught from the surf. The seventeen boys and seven adults returned to Blairsville late Friday night exhausted from their week of fun in the sun.
The mission of the Boy Scouts of America is to prepare young people to make ethical and moral choices over their lifetimes by instilling in them the values of the Scout Oath and Law. BSA Troop 101 has been serving the Blairsville- Union County community and its youth for more than 35 continuous years. We are proud to be part of our community and look forward to producing responsible citizens.
