A glimpse of the garden
Becky Landress Sentinel Writer Photos by Becky Landress

Hamilton Rhododendron Garden located at the Georgia Mountain Fairgrounds in Hiawassee, is bursting with color. The blooms on the magnificent plants are at their peak this week and many people are out enjoying it.

The garden has been maintained and added on to for years now and visitors return every season to take in the fragrance and awe inspiring colors of the beautiful plants. There are benches to rest on and even a service ran by Doug Freeland, that will take tired legs on a golf cart ride through the gardens for a minimal fee of $5.00 per person. Benches or memorial stones (in the form of 2' stone wall or plaque) can be purchased to place in the garden in memory of a loved one.

The late freezes this spring brought the rhododendrons to their peak just a little later than in previous years but very little damage was done to the plants.

One set of visitors stated that they come faithfully every year to the gardens, "Our Church group from Center Baptist in Helen comes every year and we all look forward to it," stated Ruth Johnson. Friend Delores Willard went on to say, "They seem to add something every year." Another visitor form Whales added, "I tended to a garden similar to this for over 25 years and this one is a thing of beauty."

Visitors, Delores Willard (l) and Ruth Johnson (r), sit on one of the benches and enjoy the beauty of their surroundings.
Admission to the garden is free though donations are accepted and appreciated. You may walk through the garden at your own speed or even sit and enjoy the beauty of nature.

One thing is for sure, Hamilton Garden is a treasure right in the backdoor of our North Georgia Mountains that we should all cherish.
