Volunteers needed; it's everyone's downtown
By KATHLEEN MCKEVITT Sentinel Writer

Janet Hartman
The Downtown Development Authority, headed up by Director Janet Hartman, is enlisting local folks to come join in the project co-sponsored by the Blairsville/Union County Chamber of Commerce: "The Great American Clean-up."

Volunteers are needed for the April 28th activity that starts at 9:00 a.m. for planting, clean-up of debris, benches, and general beautification of the city. To sign up, call 706- 439-6000 by April 6.

Overall, the DDA is working on short and long-term goals for city area enhancement including promotion signs and banners, suggesting design concepts for downtown buildings, creating a better pedestrian "walk-ability", and ease of access.

According to Hartman, "It's everyone's downtown." You can get involved and be informed by attending meetings, and by calling the DDA office. The next meeting is April 19th, although meetings are usually held on the second Thursday of the month.

The Great American Cleanup is a national activity and in this area is organized with other County-enhancement activities by the Union County Commissioner's Office.
